Xul on Centennial, Harding House Under the L&L Smokestack: West Nashville's Taproom Map, Redrawn

For years, a pint in The Nations meant one of two familiar names. One was Southern Grist, at 5012 Centennial Blvd. The other was Harding House, which grew out of a 2012 homebrewing habit and opened its first taproom in the neighborhood. Both names are still around this fall, but they now point to different places. The Centennial building is the same, and the beer inside is mostly someone else's. Harding House still brews the same beer and serves it from a new address, inside an old hosiery mill on Charlotte Avenue, at a counter it shares with three other businesses.

That split matters if you have been treating these names as fixed points. Here is what each room is now, and how the rest of October lines up around them.

The Centennial Room Kept Its Walls and Changed Its Beer

Southern Grist started on Porter Road in East Nashville in 2016 and opened the Nations taproom at 5012 Centennial Blvd. in 2018, according to the Nashville Post. Xul Beer Company, based in Knoxville, bought Southern Grist earlier this year. The Post set the reopening of the Centennial room, now Xul West Nashville, for Friday, Aug. 7, and reported that it would pour primarily Xul beer.

The Southern Grist label continues, on a smaller scale. Xul's expansion page says Southern Grist beer is still brewed in a limited capacity, and Xul beer is now the main Nashville production. The Post reported that Jared Welch, formerly Southern Grist's production manager, runs Xul's Nashville brewing, which keeps a familiar hand on the tanks.

The room itself is different too. City Cast Nashville described green velvet lounge chairs, horror-themed art and taproom exclusives, still next door to Nicky's Coal-Fired. Abridged Burger Company handles food at both of Xul's Nashville taprooms. As of October 2026, Xul's location page lists these hours:

  • Monday through Thursday: noon to 10 p.m.
  • Friday and Saturday: 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • Sunday: 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Harding House Kept Its Beer and Changed Its Address

Harding House took the opposite path. StyleBlueprint reported that the brewery closed its Nations taproom in 2024 and reopened this fall at L&L Market. Visit Nashville lists the reopening among its September 2026 openings. Harding House gives its address as 410 39th Ave. N. The market's own directory uses 3820 Charlotte Ave.

The beer is still the beer. The brewery's About page says it still brews and distributes Harding House beer throughout Tennessee. What changed is the room around it, which now holds four concepts:

Concept What it serves at L&L Market
Harding House Brewing Co. Beer built on Tennessee agriculture and seasonal ingredients
Jubilee Bar Seasonal cocktails, spirits, wine, Harding House on draft, non-alcoholic drinks
Saap Saap BBQ Southern barbecue combined with Lao cooking: smoked meats, sticky rice, Lao dipping sauces
Dogwood Acres Dairy Soft serve made with Tennessee dairy milk, in seasonal and regional flavors

StyleBlueprint names Clinton Spruill and Amy Watson as the owners of Saap Saap BBQ. Put together, a beer, a cocktail, a plate of barbecue and a soft-serve cone can now share one table. The old Nations taproom never offered that combination.

The setting is a draw of its own. In a date-night piece for the Nashville Scene, the writer found that a door to the left of the brewery entrance opens onto a two-tier patio under string lights. The patio sits at the base of a 70-foot smokestack that once served the coal-burning furnace of the original hosiery mill. The beer on the table in that piece was Harding House's Church Parking Lot Lager.

The Move Changed Who Harding House Sits Beside

On Centennial, the room's neighbor is the same as before. Nicky's Coal-Fired is still next door, and more has opened along the boulevard. 6AM City listed Uni Uni Boba at 5300 Centennial Blvd. among its September openings. City Cast notes that the chain also serves sweet treats and popcorn chicken.

At L&L, Harding House landed inside a building that was already full. Davidson County Source reported that Hattori Nori, which it called Nashville's first dedicated hand roll bar, opened at the market on July 8. The Scene places it in the former Culture + Co. space and describes a $42 Kimono set. The set brings spicy tuna, salmon, yellowtail, scallop, snow crab and toro hand rolls one at a time, each meant to be eaten as soon as it lands on the paper mat. Kardes Turkish Grill & Bar sits just behind it.

L&L Market's directory lists these businesses as of October 2026:

  • Food and drink: Ben & Jerry's, Eat Bubbles, Five Daughters Bakery, Honest Coffee Roasters, Marigold Gourmet Popcorn, Penne Pazze, Taco Chela and Thai Ni Yom
  • Retail: Amelia's Flowers, growUP, Made in TN and Vinnie Louise
  • Specialty tenants: Bend and Zen Hot Yoga, CycleBar, Nashville Art Club, The Muses Studio and Studio Row, among others

Next to that roster, the four-concept setup reads as a deliberate choice. The barbecue, the cocktail bar and the soft serve stretch a taproom visit into a full evening, in a building where dinner, coffee and a yoga class are already a few doors apart.

Halloween Week Starts on Centennial

The Nations side of the map carries most of this month's dates. Light the Nations, the festival's 10th annual edition, was scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 17, on 51st Ave. N. The rest of October is still ahead:

  1. Monday, Oct. 26, 6:30 p.m. The Nations Neighborhood Association holds its October meeting at Fat Bottom Taproom, 800 44th Ave. N. The agenda includes an update from Metro Water and upcoming neighborhood events, and all neighbors are welcome.
  2. Monday, Oct. 26, 7 p.m. Thirty minutes later, Xul West Nashville hosts Halloween Trivia in the old Southern Grist room.
  3. Saturday, Oct. 31, 1 to 4 p.m. The association brings back Drink-or-Treat, its annual Halloween afternoon bar crawl along the 51st Avenue corridor, with costumes encouraged and tickets sold through Eventbrite.

The same Monday evening holds a neighborhood meeting at 6:30 and a Halloween trivia night at 7, both in Nations taprooms. Harding House, meanwhile, pours its Church Parking Lot Lager under the mill smokestack at L&L Market, and the Centennial room it once shared the neighborhood with now pours mostly Xul.
